GDMA Final Major Project Presentations

Finally I'm done! class is officially over and presentations are done! weeeee! I wish I can say I'm totally relieved but we still have our grad show coming up in May to prepare for *sigh* Anyways, successful presentation for me today...I was very nervous but I overcame my nervousness and I did great! My mom came to see me present today and she FINALLY knows and understands what I'll be doing for a living. I'm glad she came to watch me present. She was very proud of me. *happy* happy* So, my presentation is on a campaign for Vancouver Coastal Health called the "Power For Change." Vancouver Coastal Health is a world-class innovator in medical care, research and teaching. They deliver services to more then one million BC residents living in the lower mainland. It is a campaign that raises awareness of children ages 8-10 who are susceptible of conditions or illnesses involving the areas of bullying, eat disorders and depression. My objectives is to help create an effective positive youth campaign that provides a positive learning experience as well as to create an awareness to the families and the community about these important issues.
Research shows that the percentages of students who reported being victimized in the past two months from grad 1-4 is around 50%. The majority of those being bullied is girls. 35% of those students reported bullying others in the past two months. Children also learn unhealthy mainstream attitudes towards food and weight at a very young age. In a study of 5 year old girls, a significant proportion of girls associated a diet with food restriction, weight-loss and thinness. (Research data taken from PREVnet, nedic.ca)
I also did some research on youth programs in Vancouver such as YWCA and YMCA. YWCA offers a after school program called Boys 4 Real which explores themes such as masculinity, media and violence. They offer girls a program called: Welcome to My Life which focuses on choice, fear and trust. And topics such as self-esteem, healthy lifestyles, peer and family relationships and internet safety. The YMCA offers a child care program that teaches children about values of caring, respect, responsibility, honest and inclusiveness as well as to become healthy, caring individuals.
My design goals was to focus on providing the most up to date and relevant information as well as to create an appealing document/information package for my target audience. I also wanted to communicate precise information that wouldn't bore the reader but consistently keep the audiences attention on these important issues. And to present information that would help children understand the seriousness these conditions and illnesses can be and to bring about change into their lives.
